WHO IS AIRPLANES?

The new album by Airplanes, “Then Sings my Soul,” makes the listener question what it means to evoke. The first impression you get from the opening chord of the first track is “Graceland” by Paul Simon. The chord isn’t a guitar strumming or layers of notes on a keyboard, it’s baritones and bass and tenor voices singing in a style that sounds like the satisfaction of a sub-Saharan summer rain.

Yet, the Airplanes are not folk music at all. They are something quite different. They evoke some emotive essence of earlier American music while being something wholly original. And that’s the next realization that hits you as you listen to the next few tracks. These guys are not like anything you hear on the radio these days. They have soul. They play instruments with honesty: the guitar jams. The bass grooves. The drums can be both epic and mellow. Their lyrics are deep and complex and challenging.

With “Then Sings my Soul,” Airplanes give their listeners a lesson in an almost lost tradition of real American musicianship. You get rock, blues, folk, indie, and a tiny bit of punk. But more than this, their album gives the listener a lasting and impossibly beautiful experience.

It may have been whiskey or weed or just first love and heady conversation, but in that moment, when the drunkenness fades and the crash threatens, the right song can be like nectar to a thirsty hummingbird.

“Then Sings my Soul” evokes the comfort of those special songs. Airplanes keep the secret spell safe with their sound.
